We read for the dark parts.

The haunted house that feels like a character. The love story where “I’d ruin you” is a genuine promise. The indie book with a premise so strange it could only have come from one particular brain.

Black Envelope Books is a reader-and-writer project built on a decade of reviewing horror and dark romance, and years of self-publishing both under pen names. I’m here to talk about the books we love, champion the indie creators making them, and find other people who keep a light on while they read.

Some nights you want a slow burn. Some nights you want the lights out completely. There’s a place for both here.

Meet the Curator

I’m Dex Bryant (they/them)

I’ve been breathing the dark book community since 2015. For a decade, I’ve been reviewing horror and dark romance, dissecting tropes, and hunting for the indie gems the big publishers are too scared to touch.

But I don’t just consume the dark stuff – I create it. Since 2018, I’ve been in the indie publishing trenches, writing and self-publishing my own horror and romance stories under various pen names. I know exactly how much blood, sweat, and ink goes into an indie release.

I live in these genres. I breathe these genres. And I’m here to connect with other readers who refuse to read anything safe.
